BCFPE Holds General Membership Meeting - Feb 2020

Members gathered in the union office for the BCFPE general membership meeting. After snacking on meatballs, chicken nuggets, a fruit platter, and cookies, those in attendance got down to the business of the union. The membership meeting was made up of a diverse cross-section of the bargaining unit. President John Ripley noted that reclassification is an important issue for many in the union. He also noted that most often, reclassification doesn’t come from negotiations but rather reviews of job classifications by the county government.

The union is currently in negotiations with the county about the next contract. There was discussion among the membership about the nature of the negotiations. President Ripley answered all of the members’ questions and engaged with those who wanted to know specific details. He mentioned that there would be no “give-backs” in this contract. The phrase “give-back” is used when the union has previously bargained something for members but in later round of negotiations gives back what was bargained. President Ripley also addressed cost of living adjustments (COLAs). Members can expect one (that was previously negotiated) this June. Another is expected mid-contract (approximately January) but President Ripley is not yet prepared to confirm details of when and how much. For more specific information on contract negotiations and how they’ll affect your job classification, contact the union office to get an update from the negotiations committee.

President Ripley lastly reminded those in attendance to help enhance the visibility of the union. He asked that those who have dress down days consider wearing union apparel. BCFPE has t-shirts and hats, along with AFT and AFT-Maryland paraphernalia. If you’d like to promote the union at work on dress down days, be sure to contact the union office.

The next BCFPE General Membership meeting will be on Wednesday, May 20th. Click here for 2020 General Membership Meeting dates, meeting minutes, and more.
